I have an interesting analogy for marketing that I often share on training calls. It came to me one day while I was walking up our driveway in Los Angeles.

As I was walking towards the garage I looked up and noticed the largest spider web I had ever seen in my life. It spanned about 6 feet in diameter and rose from our fence up to a tree in our neighbors yard. The spider residing in the web was big and fat and looked quite content.

The spider obviously put forth a great effort to spin a web that large and was enjoying the benefits of doing so. It was also quite beautiful, with little drops of water sparkling in the sunlight.

Marketing is just like spinning a web. You are competing for the attention of viewers and the farther and wider you spin your marketing “web” the more attention you are going to capture. But, you also want to target your marketing to folks who are looking for what you have to offer, keeping in mind the characteristics of your ideal prospect.

I’ve seen some marketers take their entire marketing budget and put it all in one place…not a smart move. The more you spread it around, the better results you’re going to get. Plus, there are really inexpensive options when it comes to banner advertising.

One of the resources I use to spread my marketing far and wide is Adbrite. Adbrite is great for banner advertising as they have thousands of websites you can plop your banner onto relatively inexpensively and with great results. So, if you’re looking to drive traffic to a site, I highly recommend investigating the resource and choosing which type of advertising you’d like to engage in. They have text ads, banner ads and fully-page ads.

You can easily create your own banner ads using Photoshop or hire a vendor on Elance to create one super cheap. Get a variety for testing and see which ones convert the best. And, if you really want to know how to find the absolute best sites for advertising, join me in the Lead Generation Pro Coaching Program where I’ll be laying out the law of the land when it comes to prime advertising space that’s super cheap and highly effective.
